The Education of Little Tree
by Forrest Carter
I thought the first half of the book spoke Truth, and despite the fact that the language and structure of the book seemed stilted, the book was meaningful to me. Halfway through, I found out the details about the author's life--and promptly discredited the value of the rest of the book. Made me think more critically than I ever have about whether a book can have intrinsic value, completely set apart from the moral failings or dishonesty of the author. In the end, I hope that the story reflects the author's attempt at redemption (and that he wasn't just writing the book as a big joke), and there are some lovely passages about nature, and some really good ideas about life, but the writing really isn't that great.
