Flowers for Algernon
by Daniel Keyes
This is one of those books where you pretty much know where the destination is from the beginning, but it’s still an interesting journey along the way. This was stylistically such an interesting book - it was a tough read at the beginning simply due to Charlie’s inability to spell or properly use punctuation, and there was something a little chilling about watching it improve and then deteriorate again at the ending of the novel, even though I knew it had to be coming. This was a really interesting, really human read - there was something really beautiful and awful about watching Charlie realize the way other people saw him, as well as the separation Charlie felt with himself pre- and post-operation. Overall just a really, really interesting read, but probably not one I will ever want to come back to.
