In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

5.0

cannot recommend more- one of my all time favorite reads. vivid, precise, emotional- down to every sentence and image. the story is deeply painful, yet there is something healing about Machado telling it. it is so meaningful. As much as she analyzes and intellectually maps her story onto larger themes around queerness, relationships, and abuse, she tells it with such personal vulnerability, such messy complexity. not a word is out of place. every structural element of this book is ,,, wow!
hard to read at times... Machado rejects the idea that something intellectual has to be dehumanizing, and i love that. i am beyond grateful for this book, for Machado’s sentences. on a writing level, story level, person level - i am in awe of Machado and her work.
