Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz

4.0

I had hesitated picking up the first novel in the series - The Magpie Murders - for fear it would be too meta for its own good.  But I thoroughly enjoyed it and was amazed at Horowitz’s ability to practically write two books for the price of one.

And he does it again with the follow up - Moonflower Murders.  But Atticus Pund and his creator are both dead?!  How does this work?

Susan Ryland is back, missing her days as an editor - and she gets pulled back into the Conway / Pund universe when a rich couple think a Pund book was the key to her disappearance.

The interesting thing about Susan is she isn’t necessarily likeable?  And she’s an unlikely detective - which almost makes this series a standout!

And Horowitz manages it again - to have two mysteries in two books all play out throughout the course of one novel.

Both mysteries were well written - and to see them connected in the end was gratifying.  And there’s a final revelation that will leave you kicking yourself for having missed it.  But all the pieces come together in a final reveal which is pretty damn good.
