The Children of Jocasta by Natalie Haynes
3.75
Overall a good read. I thought the writing was just okay. The were some moments that were beautiful. I thought the choice to split the POVs and have one be third person and one be first person was a bit limiting for Jocasta, who was narrated in third person. I liked that it was an attempt at giving the women in the myth more agency but I’m not sure that was accomplished with Ismene. She made one really big choice that I liked but other than that was sort of just existing the whole time. It didn’t feel like the first person narrative was fully committed to. I still felt distanced from her. But I love a retelling and I think they are extremely valid, especially in the case of Greek myths, which vary already so wildly from storytelller to storyteller.
