“Is everyone tempted to step into a pit, just to test if it will really be the end? Maybe the humanness comes in the resisting.“
I did not think The Darkness Outside Us needed a sequel, I found it such a perfect book on its own. But very swiftly after starting this I realised I was wrong and Eliot Schrefer had done it again!
Part sequel, part effective prequel - it may not live up to the lofty expectations its predecessor set but it still makes for a spectacular continuation to one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time.
Not only was I overjoyed to be back with Kodiak and Ambrose, I also really enjoyed the new POVs of Owl and Yarrow, and the way that the narrative used switching POVs and timelines to unfurl its story. Much like its predecessor, the plot confuses and surprises - keeping the reader as much in the dark as it does the characters. And also like its predecessor it tells a story of love, space, and humanity - but also family, survival, exploration, and trying to do the right thing - even when it’s hard.
This whole duology is just really special and beautiful, and I love it with my whole soul.
