Shadow Fall
by Alexander Freed
Shadow Fall continues the story of Alphabet Squadron in another engaging, character-driven ride through a colder, harsher part of the Star Wars galaxy than the one we see presented in the films. All our heroes and antiheroes are back for more tense dogfights and even more tense interpersonal altercations in a middle act that, frankly, burned up a lot of plot points I wasn't expecting until the final chapter of the trilogy. Freed's writing is technically precise without being overly so, and his plot this time around, which is structured largely around a single event, and its immediate fallout, puts every character through brutal personal trials to prep them for the end of what I already think of as a seminal novel trilogy in the Star Wars mythos. Although not quite as exhilarating as its predecessor, Shadow Fall is another stellar addition to the canon, and I can't wait to go on one last flight with Alphabet Squadron when the next one comes along.
