The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

4.0

Happy to report that the second novel in Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series has all the charm and wit of the first, with a much more polished inner mechanism. The improvement in writing from the first is impressive and his finesse in executing a twisting plot without relying on tropes is delightful.

It felt like with the first, Osman was going purely off an idea — what if a group of elderly care-home residents unexpectedly became murder detectives? With the second, Osman takes this great idea and gives it substance, delving into backstories (especially Elizabeth’s many lives) that help ground the story and support an otherwise fantastical plot.

I’m hoping with the next, we’ll learn about the history of the other three. This series is so much fun.
