Turn The Ship Around!: A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders by L. David Marquet

informative inspiring medium-paced

3.75

The story of how Mr. Marquet "turns the ship around", allowing his crew to flourish and realise its full potential, is inspiring.  It feels very "real", and by the end of the book you almost feel like you spent time on the submarine with the crew.

Since the events described in the book are almost 25 years old, some of the "groundbreaking" approaches described in it are nowadays widely regarded as best practices.  Other insights and reflections feel still fresh and innovative to date (2023).  Either way: the book is still a relevant reading given that "best practices" are still espoused by a minority of leaders.

While Mr. Marquet is surely a remarkable leader (again: he did what he did 25 years ago, so: truly innovative!), he is only an average writer: the book could benefit from a bit more flare, and the narration from a bit more structure.  As it is, the book feels more as a collection of thoughts and experiences on leadership rather than a cohesive "model".
