Brilliant. Searing. I literally couldn’t put it down. Made me cry multiple times. And made me furious at our country’s many many injustices, past and present.
The real horror reflected in this book is our system of mass incarceration, sadism, and white supremacy. This is a novel for both horror fans and non-horror fans alike. If you’re looking for incredible literary fiction, read this book. And if you’re curious about the real “reformatory” this is based on, look up the Dozier School for Boys.
This is my first Tananarive Due, but I’ll read anything she writes from now on.
