This is a really short story that just gives us a little picture of Terec, Conju's friend who had to leave the empire -- I can't remember if it was clear in The Hands of the Emperor that Terec was actually Conju's fiancé, but that came as a slight surprise to me. I found this so sad, with that background, knowing that Conju goes to the absolute heart of the empire to serve the emperor, and thus... I can't see a way for them to be reunited.
