Vanish by Tess Gerritsen

“My name is Mila, and this is my journey.
There are so many places where I could begin the story. I could start in the town where I grew up, in Kryvicy, on the banks of the Servac River, in the district of Miadziel. I could begin when I was eight years old, on the day my mother died, or when I was twelve, and my father fell beneath the wheels of the neighbour’s truck. But I think I should begin my story here, in the Mexican desert, so far from my home in Belarus. This is where I lost my innocence. This is where my dreams died.”
Before I start I should mention this book is part of the Rizzoli and Isle series but you don't need to read the other books to understand this one, apparently all the books work well on their own as well as in the series :)
This book follows two stories that link together. One is about Mila and Olena, two young girls smuggled into America and forced to be a whore to wealthy men. When she escapes her story collides with Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles.
To make a long review short this book has some brilliant twists and turns! The first chapter introduces you to Mila and had me hooked immediately.
“She pressed her fingers to the woman’s neck and felt icy skin.
Bending close to the lips, she waited for the whisper of a breath, the faintest puff of air against her cheek.
The corpse opened its eyes.”
Soon enough Olena is waking up in a morgue, much to the surprise of Dr Maura Isles and the entire country.
After a nasty hostage situation involving Olena, Jane and a few other people things get more intense. I really don't know what to write because I don't want to spoil things!
“Now we sit and wait,” the woman said, and she settled into a chair, the gun on her lap.
“What are we waiting for?” Jane asked.
The woman stared at her. Said, calmly: “The end.”
Anyway out of the books I've read this year this one is my favourite. It pulled me in quicker than any other book and kept me wanting more and more. I never once felt bored with this book!
Overall it's a beautifully written and intense read. I am buy more of Tess Gerritsens books, for sure!
Love is the part that comes naturally, thought Gabriel. It's everything else that takes time. That we have to learn.
