The main point of this book is clearly introducing us to the setting. At times it feels more like reading a nonfiction book about the Metro because the flood of information clearly has priority over the plot and often breaks flow and pacing. Artjom as a character is no more than the eyes through which we see the Metro.
Having said that, the Metro Universe is amazing and fascinating. I will check out if the next book is more focused on character development and plot. I was sometimes bored and taken out of the story while reading metro 2033, but i would love to read plot and characters standing for themselves in this universe.
