Burning Bright by Melissa McShane

4.0

I wish that you could give partial stars on here. I would've given this a 4.75 instead of a 4. It falls just short of a 5, and that's due to it being not my type of story rather than any actual shortcoming of the book.

I loved the characters, and the magic system is different. People have talents that manifest themselves in different ways. There are Seekers, Seers, Movers, Bounders, Discerners, and Scorchers. A step above are the Extraordinaries, whose talents are even stronger. An Extraordinary Scorcher, like Elinor, can extinguish fires as well as set them.

The year is 1812. Elinor Pembroke is a young English woman, who is also an Extraordinary Scorcher. Threatened by her father to either enter into an arranged marriage, or be forced to live as almost a servant in her own home, Elinor arrives at a third solution. She offers her Scorcher services to the Royal Navy.
