rachaelbee0402 's review for:
Scorpia
by Anthony Horowitz
This was a great read. At little points throughout I kept on having weird vague recollections and half-remembered ideas of what might happen… But I was never sure whether I was remembering the storyline from when I read it a decade ago or I'm just remembering my own guesses from when I read it the first time. So I was just as excited and on the edge of my seat as ever.
(Many) moments to mention (and also some sentences to single out chucked in too):
• Tom Harris is here! The TV series has made me love this cheerfully sweet and hilarious character so I hope we see a fair amount of him! (Ah, and Alex likes a granita when in Italy. All these fancy little soft drinks, Alex. Trying to convince me you don’t just have Coke running through your veins.)
• Okay so maybe this first chapter scene where Alex stops a couple of thieves by hurling seed over them so they're attacked by birds and crash hurling themselves over a fountain and Alex actually catches his teacher's stolen bag was a little unrealistic... but it was undeniably cool.
• Oh gosh haha, I'm trying to read Julia Rothman in a Welsh accent, but just can't make it sound dark and serious.
• Tom setting off fireworks and yelling out random Italian basic phrases and singing you'll never walk alone at the top of his voice. Top lad.
• Ugh, just reading about Alex trying to escape from that dark and dank and cold and stinking flooding cell makes my skin crawl. It's terrifying! Quite probably the scariest thing Alex has faced so far I think. What a way to die. Dear lord he has a lot of courage.
• So this Nile guy just carries a half-samurai sword around under his lab coat? He is one man I would never want to cross.
• After reading all that description of delectable dinner conversation between Alex and Mrs Rothman I now really fancy some ravioli.
• The chapter ending with Alex discovering it was Mrs Jones who spoke the order to shoot, and him saying he wants to join Scorpia. Oh my gosh. (It makes me want to give him a hug.)
• ‘He hung up and felt a wave of sadness. It was as if Tom was the last link to the world he had known - and he had just severed the connection.’ -p154-5 Alex noooooooo don't do this, don't leave Tom behind
