Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

I give this somewhere between ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, but I will round up. The language was precise, so well-crafted. Really gorgeous and skillful. The genre is one I would classify as experimental, with elements feeling like Margaret Atwood and others feeling like Chuck Palahniuk. It is dystopian, hypersexual, feminist, and weird. This is definitely not a work that is easy to sort or classify, which I appreciated. I liked the writing more than I liked the overly sexualized scenes, which in my opinion sometimes took away from the writing. I guess it comes down to what one most values on the page. The longest story, Especially Heinous, was clever in form but did not hold my interest. The form couldn’t sustain the length of the piece. Overall, this was a unique and worthwhile read.
