aejohnson85 's review for:
The Constant Princess
by Philippa Gregory
An interesting take on Katherine of Aragon. Some reviewers complain that Gregory takes too many liberties in her historical fiction - while I somewhat agree, I think that is the point of historical fiction...it is fiction!
I thought the love story between Catalina and Arthur was rather sweet, and I was sorry to see that it was such a small part of the novel. Henry was likeable in this one for the most part, until of course, Katherine becomes aware of his infidelity.
Gregory chooses to switch between third and first person (Katherine) narrative. To be honest, I found this to be a bit distracting and oftentimes the first and third person parts were going over the same things which I thought was unnecessary. Unfortunately, the first person sections became more frequent as the story went on.
Overall, an interesting read for anyone who is interested in the Tudors. However, some background knowledge would be helpful (the ending could be a bit confusing to those who know little about Henry VIII's reign).
