Weird surrealist poetic historical fairy tale on the relationship between time, gender roles, flesh, and self. One of her earlier books (I'm working through her backlog), and I'd say big on ambition but lacking her contemporary refinement a bit. If you want to get into Jeanette Winterson... maybe start with another one, this one is a bit impenetrable without having read Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit as a primer.
