I enjoyed this a lot more than its immediate predecessor, A Time of Exile. It took me a little while to feel fully invested in this novel, but the second half really got me, and I loved the final 80 pages or so, the final section of the book. Kerr is so good at endings that really leave you eager to pick up the next book. I'm surprised at how attached I am to Jill and Rhodry, and I'm already sort of dreading what's going to happen to them. I'm very interested in where the plot is going, though, and I'm impressed that Kerr has managed to make the stakes in the Westlands arc of this series feel just as high as they did in the Deverry quartet. Overall, I still enjoyed the original Deverry quartet more, but I'm excited to continue reading. I hope that we get some flashbacks in future installments to Jill's time with the island elves. I feel sort of cheated of that.
