coyotesprite 's review for:
Destined
by P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast
Okay I feel the need to speak on something: This book's use of the "R" word (being the word "retard"). I saw a couple reviews where people were really up in flames about it and I would never defend the use of the word, however there is a point to be made here. I highlighted 2 occasions:
“Twin! They sent the retard bus for us!” Erin said, giggling.
“Twin, that’s really mean,” Shaunee said.
“I know, Twin. I can’t believe Neferet is so evil she sent the retard bus for us,” Erin continued.
“No, I don’t mean Neferet’s being mean. I mean it’s mean to say retard,” Shaunee explained, rolling her eyes at her Twin.”
and
“The book’s in my extremely attractive Anahata Joy Katkin bag in the retard bus.”
“Aphrodite, stop sayin’ retard!” Stevie Rae shouted at her. “I swear you need to check out www.r-word.com. Maybe you’d learn that some people get their feelin’s hurt by the r-word.”
Aphrodite blinked several times and then scrunched her forehead. “A web site? Seriously?”
“Yes, Aphrodite. Like I have tried to tell you a bazillion times, using the r-word is demeaning and just plain mean.”
It is true, the use of the word was unnecessary and put the 2 characters Erin and Aphrodite in an unfavorable light, however the authors did point out that this was inappropriate in the same context. Just felt the need to point that out.
Aside from that, I have never been confused reading these books until this one. There are some continuity errors that don't make sense to me.
1. If Neferet was responsible for creating the Red Fledglings at Tulsa House of Night, how was Shaylin marked red and how are there other Red Fledglings in other towns?
“Our numbers are growing, especially with the inrush of the red fledglings, which have been discovered in other areas as well as here.”
“There are other red fledglings? I mean, besides just ours?” I said.
“Yes.”
“But have any been Marked red, or have they all died and then un-died and turned red?” Aphrodite asked before I could give her a shut up look.
“Yours is the only red fledgling on record to date as having been marked red,” Thanatos said.
“So you know about Shaylin?” I asked.
I REALLY hope this gets explained.
2. I noticed a few editing errors but the only one I had highlighted for reference was about Travis (Lenobia's employee) and his age discrepancy.
“Twenty-seven, ma’am. That’s how many years he’d lived on this earth. He’d known twenty-seven years of sunrises and she’d known more than two hundred and forty of them."
then on the next page
“You miss her often, don’t you,” Lenobia said, studying his tanned, well-lined face. He looks older than thirty-two, but in a pleasing way, she thought.
Not trying to sound nitpicky but idk?
3. And lastly, HOW are Zoey and co. all living in the depot tunnels now with ZERO ADULT SUPERVISION??? They're living down there, sharing beds, sleeping together, having sex, and none of the adult vampyres from the school even check on them. The professors at the House of Night don't even check to make sure they have groceries. Zoey and Stark are practically shacking up.
“Like Stark needs more stress in his life? He’s still not even sleeping well because he’s still having nightmares he refuses to tell me about but which I know about because I sleep next to him and I’m not stupid.”
It's disturbing when you think about the fact that they're all minors (Vampyre or not) and the rules at the school dorms were so strict.
What I liked in this book:
1. Dragon found peace, even though I hate it had to be that way.
2. Kalona will never redeem himself in my eyes from being a rapist (neither will Stark for that matter) but he is on his way.
3. That ritual with Thanatos and the elements was actually very cool. I miss the elemental rituals from the first couple of books.
