The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde

5.0

I think Lorde achieves something monumental here. This is her urgent outcry against misogyny that she faces at maybe one of the most vulnerable parts of her adult life. Having lost people to cancer and coming into it with the perspective we have of breast cancer today, her account becomes almost horrific. I wonder what she would say today of the current landscape around cancer treatment and prevention. I wonder where we would be if not for people like Lorde who constantly rang the alarm about mortality and health.

This work is dense in an eloquent way, and not in a pretentious way. Lorde manages to be poetic without even needing to use poems. Her prose is masterful vivid, as she accounts he raw and honest account of her journey with breast cancer.
