That last third is really something else!!
This story gripped me from the very beginning, and I was more than happy to go along for the twists and turns!
Every character is so well-written that you immediately feel for them, and their interactions all feel very genuine. Some of them surprise you in small ways, keeping you guessing a bit as the story unfolds. Lyra was strong-willed, cunning, and kind, but not a natural warrior. She didn't get magical powers and all of a sudden become a badass, which I really liked. Gray, her best friend, was such an absolute sweetheart, but not without an edge to him when he was needed. Draven had some mystery about him that he held onto for longer than you might expect, only revealing a softer side nearing the last half. The rest of the characters really rounded everything
out.
The magic system is unique in many ways, and I actually liked how it was more of a tool that was used on occasion and not even necessarily a big focus. There was a firewielder roasting marshmallows just because they could in this.
A lot happens in bursts, where I feel the pacing really kicked up and then it would slow down a bit in some sections, before going full-steam ahead in the third act! The world building built up steadily and never had you feeling lost. The trials were interesting and different than you might imagine when you hear "trials," as they weren't intended to have a single winner, but be a way to ensure those chosen were of a certain caliber.
I'd describe this as Romantic Fantasy (fantasy with a romantic subplot). and verv slow-burn.
All in all, this was excellent, and I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens after that cliffhanger!
* I received an advanced copy. This in no way impacted my review. My opinion is entirely my own.
