Okay, here we go...
Romantasy now have a very common way of being similar. They are mostly Female MC centered, they are all about 'shadows' (either a shadow daddy or a shadow mummy), they are all now trying to put a new spin on 'vampires' ie....Siphons, they are all about a long lost royalty who just happens to stumble upon her birthright, and now more often they give the FMC 2 love interests, the first one always being the one who's wrong for her but the broody big guy is always definitely the one for her.
After saying all that though, I do think I read this book at the right time. I had previously read 2 romantsy books this week alone that were so disappointing in everything, even the plot. compared to them, this book was a huge step up from that as the plot actually GAVE. Be it that it just followed alot of the cliches and romantasy checklist I listed above but the plot actually made up for it.
The romance though, neither of the 2 hooked me, I think because I already knew the first love interest is just there for plot and definitely bound to be the bad guy, I didn't get into the romance. The second love interest just gave me boring vibes, it was too obvious in the beginning and I knew the whole of book 1 is just a set up for their romance in book 2 since she is just so DRAWN to him but can't explain why (cough cough...theyre mates) *insert eye roll*
After finishing this book I know for sure this book is just too similar to ACOTAR & 4TH WING. if you read those 2 books, you've read 82% of this book unfortunately but the plot is captivating enough to be a redeeming quality for the book.
I just think the FMC was just too trusting and too calm for what was happening around her. I do like the villain story though, not cliche in one major aspect that saved it. It reminded me of Jujutsu Kaisen and I was glad.
I wish book 2 was out so I just read how Kallan is punished because damn that's a good villain. If you feel the need to see them suffer then their plans are diabolical enough to be a good villain. Bring on book 2
