I was not sure how interesting I would find this biography of Eliza Hamilton, as I mainly viewed her as a wife and mother. She was overall a good and loyal woman and, while that is not a put-down, how interesting is it? As the saying goes, it's not the well-behaved women who make history. However, this biography reads more like a novel and keeps a quick pace. It is helped along by the fact that while Eliza was generally mild-mannered, her sisters are on the wilder side and she has contact, sometimes close contact, with many Revolutionary-era American figures. In addition, I appreciate that Mazzeo does not attempt to make anyone a saint; they are presented as the multifaceted, often slave-owning, people they were. Finally, the depth to which Mazzeo discusses the Reynolds affair and the alternate theories behind it was new and fascinating.
