Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

4.0

I don’t leave books unfinished; if I started reading, I’ll force myself to finish it. Nevertheless, I almost gave up on Catch-22. It was fragmented, all over the place, with a confusing storyline and even more confusing characters… but that was the point! I realised I was actually enjoying the book around chapter 20 or so.
I guess my turning point was when Colonel Cathcart asked the chaplain to say a prayer before a mission, whilst keeping religion out of it; it was then that the satirical aspect of the book started to grow on me, and made me see this story with others eyes. I actually laughed out loud when the colonel was surprised to know that enlisted man prayed to the same God as officers!
I am so glad that I kept on reading! I was positively surprised with this good, and the closing chapters, where everything got bleaker and tenser, left me on edge!
