Pinocchio
by Carlo Collodi
The combination of an incredibly dark fairy tale and the brilliant illustrations of Gris Grimly is just too awesome! Pinocchio, as someone who has yet only seen the Disney film (and is a 22-year-old woman), was a creepy, fast-paced, and satisfying read. It's a great companion to the likes of Grimm Brothers, and has a very serial-esque vibe (which makes sense, seeing that's how Collodi originally wrote it). My one qualm with the story is the summaries that come before each chapter, which essentially spoil a lot of what happens in said chapter. As someone who had it spoiled a long time ago by internet research, I didn't care too much, but I can see how it would bug some people. My one recommendation for reading this book, which is probably one that everyone else is saying, is don't go in expecting happy-go-lucky Disney. It's very different, and as much as I love the 1940 film, I like the darkness of the book even more. Definitely a children's classic that needs more attention. :)
