We Deserve Monuments
by Jas Hammonds
Beautiful! Very YA so if that’s not for you… carry on. I loved it! I think Avery’s character development is beautiful. She is so morally strong and I think I learned from her bravery and fierce loyalty.
I liked the humanization of her fraught grandmother and the way that themes around enslavement, racism, the KKK, and continued due reparations and acknowledgement of generational harms was addressed.
This book is heavy and explores big topics — especially around queerness and religion but I think it does it well! I loved Simone and Avery and was excited to root for them. I’d recommend!
