I enjoyed the story and the mild magical elements. Unfortunately, the author spent a lot of time on build up and identifying conflict that we're a good read with pleasant character development, but then resolved conflicts so easily that it felt more like I was reading a modern Middlemarch. Nice story and well-written, but ended simpler than I expected when I started it.
