The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

5.0

I had been meaning to read this book for a while. I'm sorry I waited so long. It was an emotional, intelligent and comprehensive look at the life of the main character, Starr and the complexities that lie behind the relationships of modern families, friends, communities, institutions of power/control and racial groups - all of which are further complicated by the police killing of a Black boy and the lack of institutional accountability that follows. Excellent story-telling with a smooth delivery, yet also very substantive messaging. I highly recommend.
