This book exceeded my expectations! The characters have depth that isn't common in this genre. While the characters have gone through/continue to go through very intense trauma, the portrayal is compassionate and sensitive instead of fetishizing their pain. The behavioural responses to trauma are also realistic, and help to show the difficulties and nonlinearity of the healing process.
