I didn’t like The Broken Kingdoms as good as The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms but it doesn’t surprise me since it’s vol. 2.

I thought the story was well written and all the characters were very loveable! The world-building was as excellent as in the first book and Jemisin’s way with words is still as brilliant and astounding.

The only reason I can’t give 5 stars is because my judgement is badly influenced by a review I read stating that Oree’s blindness was not well-written at all. I read this review mid-book and I admit I hadn’t given much thought to it when I first started reading but this comment followed me until I finished the novel and I can now say that it is true. Oree’s relationship with her sight is very odd and doesn’t seem very true to what blindness really is. Oree’s blind but she can still see magic things and her eyes aren’t normal, her cornea is protruded and I feel like it doesn’t do anything good to the story.

She gains sight at random moments too, visual descriptions are very often used and I kept on wondering whose point on view we were following.

Overall, it was a great novel and I really want to see through the end of this trilogy but I can’t ignore that the main character’s disability was probably not something that should have been written, or at least not like this.
