A funny grumpy/sunshine rom com! This was my first Melanie Harlow book and it had me laughing!
• Single dad • Age Gap • Grumpy/Sunshine • Firefighter • Neighbors with Benefits • Instant Attraction •
Dexter is a 34 year old retired Navy SEAL turned firefighter with two school age daughters who moves in next door to 22 year old recent college graduate and event coordinator Winnie. Dex is recently divorced and has shared custody of his girls, who just happen to be with him on move in day and are the reason Dex and Winnie are formally introduced. But his failed marriage has Dex convinced he would never make a good match for someone again.
Winnie is the kind of person I would describe as being in love with love. She always been quick to fall “in love” with any guy she’s liked even a little since grade school. But after her 6 week engagement is called off, Winnie swears off love and men altogether. That is, of course, until the hot single dad moves in next door.
Neither Winnie nor Dex can deny the instant physical attraction they feel for each other and both agree to have a “benefits” arrangement with no strings attached and absolutely no falling in love. We all know how that goes!
It was lighthearted and funny, especially all the interactions between Dex and his daughters and just Dexter’s grumpiness in general. Dex is a grouchy “old man” and uses Winnie’s age as his reason for not wanting to pursue more with her. But there is a lot of unresolved issues from his past that Dex has to confront before he can be happy.
I loved Winnie’s youthful yet mature attitude. She’s great with Dex’s kids and at times, she seems more sure of what she wants than Dexter. And I appreciate her straight forward attitude/confidence.
I listened on Audible. While I enjoyed the story, the audio was not my favorite. Winnie’s audio sounded “tinny” and far away. And the narrator for Dex doesn’t do a great female voice.
