The Quickening: Creation and Community at the Ends of the Earth by Elizabeth Rush
4.0
I read this book in connection with my trip to Antarctica and I highly recommend it. The author does a great job of describing the unique and magnificent ecosystem of Antarctica and exploring what is at stake for babies being born into the world that is warming at an alarming rate and what their futures may hold. There are numerous powerful quotes tying Antarctica to motherhood based on the calving glaciers that birth icebergs. Rush urges readers to consider Antarctica as "not an inhospitable island at the bottom of the Earth, but as a mother, a being powerful enough to bring new life into the world."
