A Wolf in the Garden by Allegra Hall

started off cozy vibes, mainly smut

Mainly smut, second chance, small town romance, wolf-shifter and paranormal romance, mates, cozy vibes, mega rich x humble living, HEA obvious, Maori author and Maori MFC which is cool

Based on the story intro i didn’t expect the sex to start so soon. The attraction between characters is clear but it quickly gets silly when even in the most tense situations they’re both just thinking about the other person naked. Oh it’s mainly sex, I see. It’s kinda lol at this point but it’s like their strongest emotions can only be expressed in sex. This is a smut book with paranormal elements and very mild second chance angst, very mild.

The book remains light hearted throughout. For example, when Ellie and Lacey reunite, it happens off page, despite it being a point of tension for her character leading up to the moment. The story glosses over most bits in favor of any “intense” scenes to occur solely between Ellie and Van and mostly as a lead up to sex.

We wade through a lot of unclimactic lead up to the conflict, and quite a lot of sex too. It is a little disappointing that the expected conflict is the actual conflict and there’s no real twist when it was discussed throughout the book as a “mystery.” Ngl the mate bonding was kinda stupid and I have no clue how we got there or why in the moment.

So the conflict didn’t even happen. Maybe this is supposed to be more of a cozy read? But the stress and anxiety the characters have of the conflict really contradict that. So it’s mainly a smut.
