I Love My Purse
by Belle Demont
Ok, so, I like the idea of this book, and I even like the illustrations and the writing, but I feel like the message doesn't work. Charlie loves his bright red purse and decides to bring it to school with him. Other people compare his love for his purse with inappropriate things that they aren't allowed to do, but ultimately he inspires them to do those things too. The problem is that some of those things the other people want to do ARE inappropriate. MAYBE the dad can wear a Hawaiin shirt to work on Fridays and not get fired, MAYBE the girl in his class can wear tiger face paint to school, but the other kid at school definitely can't just start cooking in the cafeteria because he's tired of what the lunch ladies make. So while this book came close to being good, it ultimately doesn't work for me because of this. I suppose you could still use it and discuss these issues with the kids? I feel like there are probably better options out there.
