The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

5.0

I learned so much from this beautiful bildungsroman. Satrapi's memoir is written with the western reader in mind and both immerses you in and teaches you about Iranian culture, oppression, rebellion, war, and family in the 1980s and '90s. It's about so many things, and while there is absolutely violence and death (done in her art style that is grim and yet not gruesome), it is just as much about being a teenager, finding yourself, finding your passion and purpose, and pushing back against persecution. Satrapi is a daring and edgy character, and she recounts her own past with a wry and self-aware wit.
