Chaos Terminal by Mur Lafferty

4.0

3 stars if not for Tina, but she makes it 4. How can you not love the most impulsive of the generally sedate mineral-based Gneiss alien people, who has decided to evolve herself into a battle mech because it's "f#&%ing metal"?
From a mystery plot building perspective, there are a couple things going on in this book that need to be figured out, and because it's a mystery I assumed they were all related. To the extent that they were not, I'm not sure if that's cheating, or shame on me.
Generally, I love this setup. I like the worldbuilding and the concept and I remember the gist of who the characters are and how they work. But I couldn't shake the feeling that I would be better equipped to understand this book if I had a clearer memory of the final few chapters of the first one. So I went back and read them, and it was helpful, but also it confirmed that I wasn't missing much. I would have really appreciated if Lafferty had done that thing some authors do where you get a summary of how much time has passed and the relevant "previously on..." info in the first chapter or two.
