Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly

5.0

A young 13 year-old girl,Lucinda disappears from a village in the Lake District and Lisa is blamed in part because of a mis-communication. This results in the police not knowing for several hours. What Kind of Mother Are you is a fast paced novel with gripping short chapters that keeps the reader wanting more.
The novel is told from 3 points of view being quite distinguishable from each other.
I liked the world Daly creates in that we're in the lake district, quite a vast remote area for the UK but she sets the novel in a village close to Windermere, added a freezing cold rain and it begins to feel hemmed in and claustrophobic.
Daly sets things up nicely and you wonder what's that there for? It all makes sense as the loose strands are explained,
The concept of Lisa blaming herself for the girl's disappearance I couldn't fathom because of certain flaws in her argument but in the end there is a rational explanation.
The Detective, Joanne is a down to earth character and my only gripe with the book was Daly making her obsessed with her own breasts.
Having said that although the book deals with the disappearance of children it asks a great question, how far will you go to keep your family together?
