The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency
by Alexander McCall Smith
When I was getting ready to visit Botswana, everyone recommended that I read this book (and it's sequels). I wan't really that excited about the idea since this book is about a young African woman but written by an old Scottish* man. BUT, when I got to Botswana, a local woman raved about it and said that it really captured the culture and feel of Botswana. So, I decided to give it a try. She was right!! I can see a lot of the culture and descriptors even though I have only been here for a short time. As far as the mystery goes, it's not that strong, but this is a book that you read in order to "travel" somewhere new.
*It turns out that Alexander McCall Smith was born in Zimbabwe and worked as a law professor at the University of Botswana. Only now does he live in Scotland.
