AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order by Kai-Fu Lee

5.0

This is one of the most fascinating books I have read. It gives a crystal clear image of the state of technology comparing US and China and what lies ahead with the current environment.

Kai-Fu Lee dispelled the notion that China is always lagging behind, copying American technology. While that was true, he shows that today, China is a powerhouse of its own, innovating, and incredibly well setup to lead the world stage in AI moving forwards. He shows that data, government support and work culture are three big factors in China's favor.

The book also shows how China works harder, much harder than Silicon Valley which was surprising. They work wildly longer hours, and go to extreme lengths to succeed against intense competition, leading to high quality products in the long term as competition is squeezed out.

Overall, it shows the importance of focusing on technology as a nation, and not just having independent companies. My impression is that China will succeed because of their focus on being a technological leader at any cost. Other countries must ensure they are also focused on stimulating innovation and technology to stay ahead.
