I went to read this after finishing the first season of the anime adaption and loving it. Upon researching (looking through reddit comments) and finding out the next season sucked, I decided to search out the source material and the novel seemed like the better option than the manga.
In the case of this first volume (and the next couple, I'm sure), it's essentially a recap of what happens in the anime. I'm a little surprised at how true to the source material the anime was. For now, anyways. I enjoyed reading it despite it being material I already know.
One thing I did appreciate is that we can see what Naofumi is thinking and what thoughts fuel his actions. His first impression/thoughts of Raphtalia and the slave market were not what I thought they'd be, but they explained his actions way more than the anime did.
In terms of like the writing itself (and the rating I gave this): I didn't really know what made a light novel a light novel but it definitely is a light novel! It was a quick read not only because I knew the story already, but also because it's literally an easy ready.
I will be making my way through this series when time permits!
