Did not finish book.

I appreciated the queerness but other than that this just didn't do it for me (but gay?? I know, I'm as surprised as you). I think I just lean more towards a soft scifi - I found it very technical and worldbuildy, which I'm sure a lot of scifi fans would enjoy, but I think I err too much on the side of character to be totally down for this. My tastes seem to align more with a The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet than a A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe. So, not for me, but I can imagine it being for a lot of people :)
