The Risk by Elle Kennedy

4.5

*REREAD IT WAS GOOD ENJOYED IT READ IT IN ONE SITTING OVER 3 HOURS

the risk was a solid 4.5 stars.
eeekkkkkk where do i even begin with this book...from the beginning? with the characters? the juicy plot?
well, the risk is about brenna and jake. brenna is the daughter of briar's hockey coach, and jake is the captain of the harvard team. they had a lot of fun tension in the chase, and i was super excited to see their story unfold here.

brenna and jake are two of my favourite characters ever. brenna is beautiful, breathtakingly ethereal but also very badass and driven. she wants to work as a broadcaster in the sports industry. however, the interviewer is a blatantly obvious misogynist, and somehow at the end of the interview she has told that jake connelly is her boyfriend.
so starts a brief, fake dating date. afterwards, jake decides he wants a real date, yada yada yada.

jake is my dream boy. if i said i am attracted to fitzy's type in real life, connelly is the type of boy i would die to be with in my dream world. it just makes it extra juicy that he was on the opposite team. mwah. but, with that being said, we didn't really get to see jake's backstory. or find out anything substantial about him :C

this story was really long for an elle kennedy book! usually they range from 200-300 pages, nice and quick and easy reads. this one was 400, which still wasn't crazy but i liked it.
a lot of things happened in this book, but what i really enjoyed overall was how this book didn't sugarcoat that life isn't sunshines and rainbows. some books in the series were definitely a lot more fluffy, not really focusing on things other than the relationship in the book. and while relationships are all fun and dandy, but they aren't the sole purpose in anyone's life.

brenna has a lot of baggage. she made a lot of mistakes when she was younger, causing the relationship with her dad and herself to be very strained. her and jake have a lot of attraction and chemistry, but they are both hesitant(ish) to become involved. they have a lot of really important moments in the story that i deemed as pivotal moments. moments where they saw each other from a different light, or their relationship took a new step, for example. there were a lot of moments in this book which i really liked.
that being said, there was no slow of cute, fluff moments either. eg, their bowling date. i was squealing the whole time obsessed with their relationship.
that being said, i am a little let down by the ending. it was more focused on both of their personal growth rather than relationship growth. don't get me wrong, it was a very happy ending but i am sorely disappointed that we didn't get a kiss or scene or anything. yes, it's implied but i didn't love love it.
i really really enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone. a classic beautifully written kennedy hockey romance. loved it!
