A New Dawn
by John Jackson Miller
after a long nightly debate w myself this ends at a 3 for me
idk how to best tackle this book and i know im gonna forget things so if this gets edited like 5 times shhh you saw nothing
the plot was kinda.. boring..? only because it took so long to set up probably but it was a very boring plot in general. however, it was executed well and probably quite thought through.
the book starts very very slow because they have to set everything up first, but i feel like thats sometimes more common in star wars books so maybe im just an imptient lil shit. id actually give the first 40% of this book a 2.5, 40-90% a 4,5 and then the last 10% a 1 literally the most mid ending ever.
i feel like the plot was made to facilitate the meeting of Hera and Kanan, which isnt necessarily bad, but I don’t think this approach worked very well. Kanan is still very angsty and grumpy and like actually dumbfoundly annoying, and his character arc in this book is literally that he just decides to go with Hera because he thinks she’s cool?!???! it just didnt make much sense and actually over the whole book the both of them together had very ample development. a better approach would have been in their early days of partnership, when they’re both still rough around the edges and over the course of the book they start to trust each other on a very dangerous and personal plotline. that would explain how they become such a close-knit and sometimes awfully silly duo in Rebels. this book just didn’t feel like either of them.
literally what makes me mad is that the side characters either had more development or just in general a better story than Hera and Kanan. it feels like Miller thought about the plot constantly and was making it perfect (which does not go unnoticed), but he kind of forgot who this book was really about. in contrast to dark disciple - which really focused on the two main characters and the plot served as a strong backbone for it, neither Hera or Kanan feel like the protagonist in this book. theyre just pawns in Miller’s little silly plot. the antagonists in this book were interesting actually and had better or more steadfast motivations than any of the protagonists & some of the side characters
i said before that Kanan was annoying and I mean he really was insanely annoying. he’s still a bit of a little shit in Rebels but thats because of his trauma probably and now he’s the found family dad of like 4 lgbtq+ children so i can forgive him for it. i understand why he’s annoying in the book because my man is traumatised from seeing his mother figure die and then literally having to change who he is just so he wont get killed, but it didn’t make much sense to push that act so hard. and maybe he really did start to become his own annoying brawly kinda sexist persona over the years, but it felt more like Miller had no idea who he was writing about. Hera is very Hera-like, especially in conversation, but her own spark of why she does what she does also seemed very lost. Kanan got a lot of introspection and some of it was really good, Hera got literally nothing. my sweet precious and awesome pilot girl got no fucking development and im so mad. i want a book purely about Hera from a Hera fan, that’s the only way she can be done some justice lol.
one more thing: where. was. Chopper.?
WHERE WAS MY FUNKY LITTLE SALT SHAKER ASS LOOKING DROID
I DONT CARE IF HIS ONLY LINES WERE ‘BRRBBRRBBRBRBRBR’ DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE THAT LITTLE GUY
the literal biggest missed opportunity maybe the simple addition of Chopper to the plot would have saved this book.
summary: hella mid. i need better books about both of them.
