Close to Home by Robert Dugoni

4.0

CLOSE TO HOME is the 5th instalment of the Tracy Crosswhite series. As per Dugoni's usual fashion, two active cases are being investigated by the Violent Crimes 'A' team (Tracy, Kins, Del, and Faz). The first case is the investigation of the death of a young boy in a hit and run. The second case involves a recent surge of heroin overdoses which tie in with the suspect, an active-duty naval officer, of the hit and run. Tracy is quickly realizing the secrets lie deeper than she first thought.

I love how Dugoni writes such intricate and engaging plots, holding the reader captive as he reveals each new piece of information or plot twist. Emily Dutton-Smith is a fantastic narrator and I truly adore that she has been narrating each novel from the beginning.

I really like the character development Dugoni exhibits in each of the primary investigators as the series progresses. Kins and Del are heavily featured in this novel compared to previous instalments and this allows the reader to get to know each character more intimately. We get to see the day to day struggles of each main character: Kins is struggling with health issues while Tracy struggles with conceiving. Del's niece, Allie, recently died of a drug overdose so this case touches close to home for him. Dugoni does a great job of sharing Del's pain and struggles with both his personal and professional ties with drug use - aiding in opening the eyes and understanding of the reader.

While this series could be read as standalone, the character development and background progresses with each novel.
