I had never heard of this author before and after reading this I am amazed that she writes historical romance/romcoms. This was definitely a departure from anything remotely close to a romcom.

This book is an important lesson why you really need to read books by diverse authors. The description of the book hints at sinister doings but I was not prepared for this level of nefarious deeds. I was shook as the kids say.

It wasn’t just the effects of gentrification that were upsetting; the behavior of these people moving into this predominately low income and ethnic community is horrific. But real. We see it daily in how police respond to black and brown people, how politicians continue to marginalize minority communities, and how our own families side eye anyone who looks different than they are because they have it in their little pea-sized brains that somehow these people are dangerous and only want to harm others. This was a work of fiction, but the terrifying thing is I wouldn’t be surprised if this happens on smaller scales today in real life…
