Overall, I enjoyed this book, loved the world-building, and found the characters to be well-rounded and complex (realistically flawed, yet still relatable and endearing). I also found the writing style to be wonderfully fluid and descriptive. I didn’t find it very believable that the previous war seems to have been predominantly fought and won by 12-15 year olds, and that there appear to be zero adults in San Irie of any authority or consequence. I wish this series had been a trilogy, where the first book had covered the the war directly, because it’s an event that is so central and vital to the characterizations, relationships and events happening in this book. Being able to see how everything had built up to this point, rather than just being told about it, would have enriched the story and characters.
