I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark by Debbie Levy

4.0

This book does a great job of getting across what's exciting and important about the work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in terms a small child can understand. It praises her disagreement-with-a-purpose, her drive, and her insistence on fairness, and grounds everything in anecdotes and quotes. There is more information at the end pointing more advanced readers to further sources on her life and work. The illustrations effectively link RBG'S work through her life to the ongoing larger struggle for justice. The book also carries a general strong message that all ethnicities should have the same rights and that boys and girls should have the same opportunities and be able to choose their roles in life freely. Justice Ginsburg consulted on this book, so you can be fairly sure they got the details and tone right. It made me tear up at one point. Good stuff. If a kid likes this book but is older and ready for more, show them On the Basis of Sex, about her college years and work with the ACLU; the movie is much in the same spirit but goes into much more detail about the work necessary and the legal context of the time she had to work against.
