Evolution The Human Story by Alice Roberts
Undoubtedly, a successful book that highlights the strengths and weaknesses of what science knows and, in some cases, speculates about our origins. I find it particularly fascinating how so much can be mapped about our origins, as well as the origins of other organisms, through DNA. Before the 1990s, this was not possible, and much guesswork was involved in understanding the evolutionary origins of organisms.
It's also fantastic to witness how humanity has developed in the last ten thousand years. It's not surprising that humanity holds itself in high regard when you consider what we've achieved and compare it to the accomplishments of other life forms. However, we cannot assert with certainty that Earth is ruled by humanity (not a feature of the book). For instance, cyanobacteria are much more significant and will continue to thrive long after us. Nevertheless, among all the larger animal species, humans are undoubtedly the most successful in the last million years, in a way the Earth has never seen before.
It's also wonderful that the book is filled with images, providing a clearer understanding of what the author discusses. I have a greater admiration for the many scientists who collectively piece together this comprehensive picture.
