I enjoyed this book, ai met the author at a waterstones event that spoke of Femanist retellings. This book is a passion project that was heavily researched while being written. The author spoke a lot about the forgotten female counterpart of the Christian god and how she was erased but is still prevalent throughout the biblical texts. This is the main plot rather than a story of Lilith alone, it is how the female deity has persevered through the patriarchy's erasure of her, which I love.
In a relatively short book it spans the "beginning" to modern day. There are a lot of heavy hitting topics and there is no doubt that this is a commentary on the patriarchy as well as how we as humans treat eachother and the world.
I enjoyed the character of Lilith, my only concern was that I wished more of her magical/otherworldly side was used. She was humanised which for this story make complete sense.
I also felt like the last third of the book slowed it's pace, which I didn't love, however there was so much historically to add.
This is not a fantasy, it is a historical book that talks about the female divine. That means that this does not come from a typically religious or pagan viewpoint, this is from an author who is passionate about the ancient texts and history. I enjoyed this aspect and would like to add this book is an easy read (it took me two days). Even though historical it doesn't read like a history book, it is very much a fictional novel.
